About Nature Camp Nature Camp was founded in 1942 for the express purpose of providing education in the natural sciences and conservation. After a number of years at Sherando Lake, the camp was moved to its present, permanent location in 1952. Nature Camp facilities are on land leased from the US Forest Service, and are surrounded by thousands of acres of the George Washington National Forest. The lands and nearby streams are our classrooms for a variety of subjects. Typically, eleven different courses are offered each session, including botany, limnology, entomology, ornithology, herpetology, geology, meteorology and others. Each student chooses a subject to major in, and receives at least fifteen hours of instruction in this subject. Each student also receives an introduction to all of the other courses. Each student completes eleven written class projects, a longer project in their major and shorter projects for each of the other classes. A typical day begins with reveille at 7:30 am, followed by breakfast, served family style, at 8:00 am. The morning class period runs from 9:00-10:30 am, with open time from 10:30-12:00 noon. During this time, campers choose among hikes led by our staff, swimming in our pool or the nearby streams, nature study, or work on academic projects in our library. After lunch, everyone enjoys a one-hour rest period. Afternoon class begins at 2:45 pm, with another open period starting at 4:15 pm. Dinner begins at 6:00 pm, with free time until 8:00 pm, when an evening activity is planned. Activities range from slide presentations from working scientists, environmentalists, and other professionals to staff/camper talent shows to square dances and campfires. Sessions are limited to about 85 campers. A large cabin holds all of the boys, with an adjacent bathhouse; the same is true for the girls. In addition to the living quarters and dining hall, Nature Camp has a lab/museum/library building and a small store. Since its conception, Nature Camp has been unique in its academic focus. Many former campers have become professional scientists, naturalists, and ardent conservationists. Nature Camp is designed for young people who have a genuine interest in nature and conservation. Those looking only for a recreational experience will not be happy here. |
